The Cleveland Indians ended 46 years of spring training in Arizona with an 11-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Tempe.

The Indians will shift their spring training operations to Homestead, Fla., next season.

The Mariners, whose sale is pending to a Japanese-led group of investors, played their final exhibition home game after 16 years in Tempe. The Angels will move to Tempe from Palm Springs next spring. The Mariners still do not have a spring training home for 1993.

The New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox have resumed trade talks involving high-priced right fielder Jesse Barfield.

Yankee managing general partner nominee Joe Molloy characterized the clubs’ chances for a deal as “70-30,” but others did not seem as optimistic. Yankee General Manager Gene Michael would say only, “It’s a possibility.” And White Sox General Manager Ron Schueler, who said late Thursday afternoon he believed the deal to be “dead,” added: “My last report is that their club is set, and (Barfield) is going north.”

The Yankees, who previously requested starter Wilson Alvarez for Barfield, have softened their stance. The White Sox already have added right-handed power hitter George Bell but still need a right fielder after trading Sammy Sosa.

The Yankees optioned catcher John Ramos and infielder Hensley Meulens to their triple-A Columbus farm team. In addition, they sent pitcher Allan Anderson to Columbus, where he will continue his injury rehabilitation program.

The Houston Astros traded Curt Schilling to the Philadelphia Phillies for Jason Grimsley in a swap of young right-handed pitchers.

Grimsley, 24, split last season between Philadelphia and triple-A Scranton, appearing in 12 games for the Phillies and going 1-7 with a 4.87 earned-run average in 61 innings. He will report to the Astros’ triple-A team in Tucson.

Schilling, 25, was acquired by Houston from Baltimore on Jan. 10, 1991, along with Pete Harnisch and Steve Finley in a trade for Glenn Davis. Schilling spent time in Tucson and Houston last year, going 3-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 56 games for the Astros.

The Atlanta Braves trimmed their roster to 26 players by sending pitcher Pete Smith and catcher Francisco Cabrera to their triple-A Richmond team.

Smith, a four-year veteran, had a 3.94 ERA this spring in 16 innings. He was 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA for the Braves last season.

General Manager John Schuerholz tried to trade Smith, but discussions with the Angels, Cleveland and San Diego fell through, Smith said.

Cabrera hit .242 in 44 games with the Braves last season.

The Braves also purchased the contract of catcher Jerry Willard, a nonroster invitee, from Richmond.

The Cincinnati Reds got down to their 25-man opening day roster limit by releasing infielder Al Newman and sending outfielder Jeff Stone and catcher Troy Afenir to their minor league camp for reassignment.
