Allergic Reaction Will Keep Riley in Hospital Longer

County Supervisor Thomas F. Riley is expected to remain hospitalized over the weekend after suffering an allergic reaction to his diabetes medication, an aide said Friday.

After a series of tests during the last few days, doctors at Hoag Hospital also discovered that the supervisor suffers from bronchitis.

Riley, 79, had been scheduled to be discharged Friday. However, he remained in the hospital after tests revealed the bronchitis and the allergic reaction, said executive assistant Christie McDaniel.

Riley’s bronchitis is “not a serious condition, but because of his asthma, doctors wanted to watch it,” McDaniel said. The supervisor has suffered for years from diabetes, emphysema and asthma.

Riley was listed in good condition Friday, according to a nursing supervisor.

He is expected to be discharged from the hospital Sunday and plans to report to work Monday, McDaniel said. He has been hospitalized since Wednesday.

Aides said Riley seemed to tire easily and had checked into Hoag Hospital for tests.
