SAN DIEGO : Bid to Lower Bail in Attack Is Rejected
A judge refused Friday to lower bail for two men suspected of committing a hate crime against a gay man whose leg was broken in an attack in Clairemont last week.
Attorneys for Aaron Graham, 18, and Michael Favreau, 20, argued unsuccessfully that their $50,000 bail should be drastically lowered or they should be allowed to remain free on their own recognizance.
The men are charged with assaulting Joe Grubb, 37, of Clairemont, whose leg was broken in three places in the March 26 incident. They are also accused of attacking the victim because of his supposed sexual orientation, a civil rights violation.
Deputy Dist. Atty. Luis Aragon told San Diego Municipal Judge Jay Bloom the defendants attacked Grubb without provocation. A preliminary hearing has been set for both men April 13.
