CROPPER’S CABIN by Jim Thompson (Vintage: $8.). The latest in the Vintage series of Black Lizard reissues, “Cropper’s Cabin” probes the repressed emotions that fester among the dirt-poor farmers of rural Oklahoma. Narrator Tommy Carver believes he’s the adopted son a miserly, self-righteous sharecropper: When he threatens to upset the grim status quo by dallying with the daughter of a wealthy landowner, he finds himself on trial for a murder he didn’t commit. Thompson describes the daily cruelties and petty jealousies that corrode human existence with typical skill, but the optimistic ending he tacks onto this harsh tale seems considerably less than convincing.
