Council May End Water Restrictions

Oxnard’s City Council will consider Tuesday eliminating its mandatory water conservation program because its main water supplier no longer requires cutbacks.

In place of the current mandate to reduce water use by 15% compared to last year, the city Public Works Department is recommending that residents voluntarily reduce water use by only 5%.

The council vote follows a decision by the Calleguas Municipal Water District, the city’s main water supplier, to interrupt its conservation plan in view of the recent rains.

Council members said they were happy to be able to lift the restrictions. But, they added, residents will have to continue conserving because water is a limited resource and the population keeps growing.

“I’m delighted that we have more water, but we have to understand our limits,” Councilwoman Dorothy Maron said. “I don’t plan to change the way I live. Everybody is going to have to be very careful.”
