HUNTINGTON BEACH : Hearing Is Tuesday on Pier Structures
The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chamber at City Hall on the city’s proposal to construct five buildings on the new municipal pier.
The new pier is to be completed and opened in July, but it will open without any permanent buildings on it. The city is proposing to construct a new lifeguard tower, restrooms, two snack shops and a full-service restaurant on the pier after it is opened.
The old pier, closed in 1988 after storm damage and finally torn down in 1990, had five similar buildings. The city has said it wants to replace those buildings, and the Tuesday hearing is to take public comments on the proposal.
One resident, Albert Watkins, has already written to the city to say he is against putting commercial structures on the pier.
“The original intent of the pier was for the non-commercial enjoyment of the people who visited the beach,” he wrote. “Commercial uses over the years have obscured this intent.”
The city has said that commercial buildings are needed on the new pier both as a service to visitors and as a source of revenue.
