Kenneth S. Norris, UC Professor, Gets Burroughs Award
Kenneth S. Norris, professor of natural history emeritus at the Long Marine Library at UC Santa Cruz, has received the 1992 John Burroughs Award for Nature Writing for his book “Dolphin Days: The Life and Times of the Spinner Dolphin” (W. W. Norton, 1991).
The award has been given annually since 1926 by the John Burroughs Assn. at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It recognizes the finest book on natural history published during the previous year, citing scientific accuracy, firsthand fieldwork and literary skill.
Among past recipients are Rachel Carson, Loren Eiseley, John Hay, Joseph Wood Krutch, Aldo Leopold, Barry Lopez, Gary Nabhan and Edwin Way Teale.
In addition to its award for the best book of the year, the association has for four years sponsored an annual competition for the best children’s books on natural history.
The John Burroughs list of the 14 best nature books for young readers published in 1991 will be announced at a luncheon today in New York.
