SAN DIEGO : Satirical Publication Target of Vandalism

Share

The entrance to the campus office of a UC San Diego satirical publication was found painted with a swastika and other hate symbols, university police said.

An unidentified student on Sunday afternoon found the swastika and the word Nazi spray-painted in yellow on the front door of the campus newspaper, Koala, Detective Bao Luu of the campus police force said Monday.

On the floor in front of the door was painted “Koala die,” Luu said.

Campus police are not treating the incident as a hate crime because the defacement may be an act of retaliation against an article in the Koala, Luu said.

“We feel that someone is upset at an article the paper ran in the past and is targeting the newspaper and calling them Nazi,” Luu said. “Maybe they went a little too far in poking fun at a group, and the group got a little angry.”

Police were unsure if the incident was related to the April 3 vandalism at San Diego State University, where ethnic and gay pride murals were defaced with swastikas.
