EAST COUNTY : CHP to Use Radar on Rural Highways
In an attempt to cut down on speed-related accidents in rural San Diego County, the California Highway Patrol announced Tuesday that it will begin using radar on rural state highways next week.
Thirty-eight radar units were purchased to cover California 67, 78, 79 and 94.
The move marks the first time radar has been used by CHP for speed enforcement on state highways in San Diego County, CHP Capt. Steve Malone said.
The CHP is scheduled to begin using the radar April 13 in an effort to help cut down on fatalities on narrow, winding roads, Malone said. The two-lane highways collectively reported 45 fatalities during 1990 and 1991, and frequently figure in speeding complaints, Malone said.
The CHP purchased the radar units with a $112,567 grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety, Malone said.
