Taste for Expansion: Morsel by morsel, the GB Foods Corp. in Anaheim that operates the Green Burrito chain of Mexican-style restaurants is trying to become a big enchilada in the fast-food business.

A new Cypress restaurant will be the first in the chain to stay open 24 hours a day. And a new Azusa restaurant will be the first to test equipment that allows patrons to use major credit cards or ATM cards, following the lead of larger chains, such as Anaheim-based Carl’s Jr.

In a bid for increased recognition, the 50-store, Anaheim-based chain is one of the sponsors of the 45th annual Newport-to-Ensenada yacht race May 1. The sponsorship includes dishing up tacos, burritos and fajitas to the hungry crews of the 550 boats expected to compete.

While a yacht race might seem a little too patrician for a fast-food promotion, GB Foods is hoping that the Mexican connection with the race will win it some new customers.

After all, why run for the border, when you can sail over it?
