The dean of UC San Diego School of Medicine is being interviewed by Yale University to take charge of the medical school there, UCSD officials said Wednesday.

Dr. Gerard Burrow, 59, a vice chancellor and UCSD dean for more than four years, is negotiating with Yale, UCSD spokeswoman Leslie Franz said. Yale is expected to make a decision next week.

Franz said Burrow is “the finalist” in Yale’s search for a dean to replace Dr. Leon E. Rosenberg, who went to Bristol-Myers Squibb, a drug company.

Burrow grew up on the East Coast and studied at Yale, where he spent 22 years, departing in 1976 as a professor of medicine. From there, he went to the University of Toronto and finally arrived in San Diego in 1986.

At UCSD, he has overseen major projects, including renovating the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, beginning construction of the new Thornton Hospital on the La Jolla campus and recruiting faculty “stars” such as Dr. Stuart Jamieson to begin the heart and lung transplant program.
