OC Triathlon Prize Money Now $25,000

Share

Organizers of the Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon announced Wednesday that they have increased the prize money to $25,000 for the May 31 race at Lake Mission Viejo.

Better news for Brad Kearns, the two-time champion from Auburn, Calif., is that the men’s and women’s winners will each receive a Mazda Miata. He picked up a photo of the car and attached it to his name tag and said, “I’d like something in blue or red.”

The increased prize money comes as a result of increased sponsorship by Mazda, which, organizers said, has bolstered interest from other top-ranked professional triathletes.

Among those scheduled to compete in the OCPAC triathlon for the first time are Mike Pigg of Arcata, Calif., Triathlete magazine’s 1991 athlete of the year, and Paula Newby-Fraser of San Diego, who has won the Ironman triathlon in Hawaii four times.
