BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Huntington Beach Beats Century in First Round

Jon Ward and Derek Glascoe combined for a one-hitter Saturday in Huntington Beach’s 9-0 victory over Century in the opening round of the Pride of the Coast tournament at Corona del Mar High School.

Ward (5-0) pitched five innings and gave up Century’s only hit--Robert Guzman’s single in the third inning. Ward struck out six, including Guzman in the fifth with a fastball that was clocked at 89 m.p.h.

Glascoe replaced Ward in the sixth inning, retiring the six batters he faced and striking out two.

Catcher Brian Feathers and leadoff batter Mike Moutrey provided more than enough offense for Huntington Beach (14-1). Century is 3-6.

Feathers reached base four times; he had two singles, was hit by a pitch and walked. Moutrey walked, was hit by a pitch and reached safely on an error. Both scored twice.

“We’re a scrappy team and Moutrey and Feathers are typical of the kids we’ve got,” Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd said. “Ward and Glascoe didn’t walk a batter, which was a big positive considering we’ve walked eight in our last two games.”

Huntington Beach will meet host Corona del Mar in a second-round game at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Corona del Mar advanced with a 9-2 victory over Orange Lutheran.
