SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Nakabayashi Pitches No-Hitter, Irvine Wins

Share

Shye Nakabayashi pitched a no-hitter Saturday, her first complete game of the season, to lead Irvine to a 1-0 victory over Foothill Saturday in Pool 1 of the Woodbridge softball tournament.

Irvine (9-3), which left at least one runner on base in every inning, scored in the third.

Jill Sanford singled to left, but the next two batters struck out and grounded out. Foothill pitcher Leeann Gonzalez then walked Carrie Caudill, and with two outs and two on base, Alleah Poulson singled to deep center, driving in Sanford.

Monica Hollstein grounded out to end the inning.

Although Irvine was not remarkable on offense, its defense was sparkling, allowing Foothill on base only once, on an error.

“There is a little more intensity against Foothill, because that was our playoff championship (opponent) last year,” Irvine Coach Lisa Limp said. “It’s like, ‘Can we do it again?’ ”

Earlier in the day, Irvine shut out Cerritos, 3-0.
