PADRES UPDATE : NOTEBOOK / SCOTT MILLER : Harris Sees Victory Go to Myers Despite Strong Eight Innings

Share

Baseball is a game of fair and foul, and what happened to Padre starter Greg Harris on Sunday certainly wasn’t fair.

He shut out the Dodgers for eight innings. He left after two batters in the ninth, having allowed two runs (only one earned) and three hits. Only one Dodger ventured as far as third base against Harris.

Randy Myers came on and faced seven Dodgers in the ninth, yielding two runs and three hits.

And Myers got the victory, because the Dodgers tied the game in the ninth--with Myers on the mound--before the Padres won it, 5-4, in the bottom of the ninth.

Myers allowed a walk and two singles to the first three batters he faced before settling down.

“I just wasn’t making my pitches,” he said. “I don’t think you can analyze it that deeply.”

Harris said he wasn’t frustrated that Myers blew the lead and cost him his first victory of the season.

“I don’t take it personally,” Harris said. “I’ve been on the other side of the fence. I’ve come in as a reliever. It’s a tough job. . . .

“I’m not complaining about anything, believe me. We won, you know. We won.” As expected, the Padres activated pitcher Larry Andersen on Sunday and optioned pitcher Terry Bross to triple-A Las Vegas.

It was a short stay for Bross, who joined the team Friday when pitcher Mike Maddux was placed on the disabled list.

“I didn’t even expect to get activated,” Bross said. “When I got here, they told me they didn’t know what they were going to do with Maddux.

“It was great. It really meant a lot that they would do this for me. I haven’t even thrown a pitch for their triple-A team yet.”

The home schedule may have started this week, but don’t expect to see one Padre until the end of the month: Andy Benes.

The way the Padres pitching rotation works, Benes pitches at San Francisco on Tuesday and at Houston a week from Sunday. He isn’t scheduled to pitch in San Diego until April 25, against Cincinnati.

“I’ve got to practice before I face a team on my home field,” Benes said. “I’ve got to practice a lot.”

Pitching matchups for this week’s series in San Francisco: The Padres’ Andy Benes (1-0) vs. John Burkett (0-0) Tuesday; Craig Lefferts (0-1) vs. Dave Burba (0-1) Wednesday and Dave Eiland (0-0) vs. Bill Swift (2-0) Thursday. . . . The time of the Padres-Phillies game in San Diego on Monday, April 27 has been changed to 7:35 p.m. to accommodate ESPN. . . . X-rays of Juan Samuel’s left-hand were negative. The hand has been bothering Samuel since he was hit by a pitch in an exhibition game March 29.
