In response to “Hornaday, Religious Science Leader,” obituary, March 20:

The article about Dr. William H.D. Hornaday was a fine tribute to him. However, I should like to clarify two statements:

First: “The Science of Mind teachings . . . do not deify Christ.” In Religious Science, we do not deny the divinity of Jesus; but we acknowledge the divinity within each individual life as the Christ principle, or God incarnated in man--making Jesus the great example rather than the great exception.

Second: “Many so-called New Age beliefs are popular in Religious Science churches.” Members within Religious Science congregations may embrace certain New Age beliefs individually as they choose to do, because we do not tell people what they must or may not do. We also have no set dogma. Religious Science is forever open to new revelations of truth from scientific or other fields of inquiry. Because we believe and teach that everything necessary for the spiritual unfoldment of each individual lies within them, no special practices or outside accouterments are needed. “New Age” refers to a cultural movement. We are a “New Thought” religious spiritual teaching.
