Keating Aide Guilty of Embezzlement: Mark S. Sauter, a former in-house lawyer for Lincoln Savings & Loan and its parent, pleaded guilty in Los Angeles federal court to embezzling $1.6 million from the Irvine thrift during a 2 1/2-year period. The plea came 13 months after he pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge and agreed to testify against Charles H. Keating Jr., former chairman of Lincoln’s parent company. The latest conviction carries a maximum five-year prison term. Neither Sauter’s lawyer nor prosecutors would elaborate on the embezzlement, which occurred between January, 1985, and August, 1987.
