Layoffs at General Dynamics: General Dynamics said it has given layoff notices to 1,888 employees of its Electric Boat Division due to the proposed cancellation of the Seawolf nuclear submarine program. The company had earlier announced plans to lay off about 2,200 of the division’s 20,000 workers. The difference is due to attrition, said a spokesman. The Electric Boat Division is at work on the first Seawolf submarine, but the Bush Administration wants to eliminate the already-approved second and third subs. Of the total employees who will be laid off, 1,200 work at Electric Boat’s Groton, Conn. shipyard; 619 at the Quonset Point, R.I., facility; 35 at the Avenel, N.J., operation and 34 at the Tampa, Fla., engineering office, the company said.
