Kroger Workers Strike in Michigan: About 7,000 employees of Kroger Co. stores in southeastern Michigan went on strike after rejecting a contract offer, but replacement workers kept markets operating. Workers at 65 stores turned down the Cincinnati-based chain’s latest offer by a more than 4-1 vote. The previous contract, signed in 1987, expired Jan. 3. Kroger’s latest proposal called for elimination of 10 personal days a year for full-time employees and offered $1.50 an hour in wage increases spread over four years. Workers earn $4.50 to $8 an hour, to a top of $10.37 an hour for full-time employees, who haven’t had a contract raise in 11 years. Negotiations broke off April 3 and no new talks were scheduled.
