Whitaker Gives Up Lightweight Title
From Staff and Wire Reports
Pernell Whitaker has renounced his lightweight title because he is no longer able to remain below the 135-pound limit, the World Boxing Council said Monday.
The WBC said the top contenders in the division, American Darryl Tyson and Mexican Miguel Angel Gonzalez, will have a chance to fight for the vacated crown and gave them 30 days to arrange a match. Whitaker, 28, who has a 29-1 record that includes 13 knockouts, is expected to move up to the super-lightweight class.
