U.S. Delays Penalty on Canadian Beer Imports: U.S. trade negotiators said they will delay imposition of punitive duties on imports of Canadian beer to try to settle a contentious trade dispute. Canada has offered to open its market to U.S. beer in three years, but the United States has insisted that the barriers be lifted by July 1. U.S. negotiators have rejected Canada’s latest offer, delivered Monday. But Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Julius L. Katz said the United States will “delay action for a short period of time in the hope that we can achieve a negotiated solution.” If no agreement is reached, punitive duties would apply retroactively to Canadian beer imported after April 13.
