A sailor arrested Saturday in the shooting deaths of two other sailors was ordered released from jail Tuesday after prosecutors declined to file charges.

Deputy Dist. Atty. David Berry said “the investigation is continuing” into Saturday’s shootings that claimed the lives of Darrell Turner, 24, and Maurice Alan Smith, 20, of Oakland. He said he might file charges in the future.

San Diego police arrested Navy Petty Officer Byron Cochran, 23, at the scene in the 4200 block of 44th Street.

A police spokesman on Saturday said the violence stemmed from a quarrel that involved Cochran dating a woman who had also dated one of the victims.

Defendants must be released from jail if charges are not filed within two court days of their arrest, unless they voluntarily waive arraignment until charges are filed.
