Sandy Hawley, a leading jockey in his native Canada and in California for 20 years, has been elected to the Racing Hall of Fame.

In voting by 100 turf writers, Hawley was elected along with trainer Scotty Schulhofer, steeplechase jockey Jerry Fishback and three horses--Slew O’ Gold, Lady’s Secret and Johnstown.

This year’s inductions are scheduled Aug. 6 at the Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Hawley, who will turn 43 Thursday, has ridden almost 6,000 winners. In recent years he has been riding at Santa Anita during the winter and on the Ontario Jockey Club circuit the rest of the year.

Hawley rode 515 winners in 1973, a record at the time. He won an Eclipse Award as the outstanding jockey in North America in 1976 and was elected to the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1986.

Schulhofer, whose career began in 1965, has trained four champions--Ta Wee, MacDiarmida, Smile and Fly So Free--and his Cryptoclearance earned $3.3 million.

Slew O’ Gold won Eclipse Awards as best 3-year-old colt in 1983 and best older male in 1984. The son of Seattle Slew earned $3.5 million.

Lady’s Secret was voted horse of the year in 1986 and retired a year later with earnings of $3 million, a record since broken by Dance Smartly. Lady’s Secret won 22 stakes, including a victory over males in the Whitney at Saratoga and the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, both in 1986.

Johnstown, winning 14 of 21 starts and the Kentucky Derby in 1939, raced before racing’s purse structure soared and earned only $169,315. He died in 1950.
