BASEBALL: DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Sore Left Hip Sidelines Langston

Share

Mark Langston will miss his scheduled turn Friday at Kansas City because of a sore left hip. Scott Lewis, who replaced Chuck Finley the first time through the rotation, will substitute for Langston Friday.

“He (Langston) is kind of like Finley right now: if there’s any doubt we’re going to skip him,” Manager Buck Rodgers said of Langston. “If he’s 100% going into Oakland, we’ll go with him. If not, we’ll skip him because we have on off day (next Thursday) and we can reschedule our rotation.”

Langston aggravated his hip on Sunday and had to leave after five innings. He worked out Tuesday in Texas but won’t throw for several days. “It’s feeling better but it’s still a little sore,” he said.

Rodgers had Lewis in reserve Tuesday and said he wouldn’t hesitate to use Lewis for an inning. He did the same with Lewis following the right-hander’s last start and has habitually used his young starters for an inning between their starts. “If it’s a throwing day anyway for a pitcher, he’s going to get a good workout in the game,” Rodgers said. “He can save an inning for the bullpen and he’ll be ready to pitch three days later.”

Gary Gaetti’s fourth-inning single ended an 0-for-15 slump Tuesday. . . . Hubie Brooks’ home run extended his hitting streak to seven games. . . . The Angels have hired Joaquin Andujar to scout in the Dominican Republic. . . . Rookie outfielder Chad Curtis has gotten only four at-bats, far fewer than the 12 to 15 at-bats Rodgers hoped to get him each week. “The first time around, I want to see Luis (Polonia) and Von (Hayes) against left-handers,” Rodgers said, “then I’ll try to get Chad in as much as possible. He’ll start Sunday. The guy I’m going to have trouble getting at-bats is (John) Morris.”
