Divers Search Santa Ana River for Man

Share

Sheriff’s Department divers searched the waters of the Santa Ana River for about three hours late Wednesday, looking for a man who may have drowned as he and three friends were trying to wade across the channel.

Sheriff’s Department investigators, assisted by Newport Beach lifeguards, went to the mouth of the river about 6:20 p.m. after one of the man’s friends flagged down a police officer.

Investigators said the four friends were wading across the river just north of Coast Highway when the man disappeared. He may have been swept away by currents, Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Leonard said.

The other three men were able to reach the river bank, Leonard said. Investigators identified the missing man only as being 22 years old.

The search was suspended and expected to begin at daylight today, Leonard said.
