High Life: A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Sunny Hills Honored for Journalism

Jedidiah Yueh won first place in news writing and, as editor of Sunny Hills High School’s student newspaper, the Accolade, accepted the first-place award for best publication of more than four pages Tuesday at The Times Orange County’s 1992 high school journalism awards.

Yueh’s story dealt with a hostile amendment to a bill in the California Legislature. Honorable mentions went to Saddleback’s Oanh Ha in news and Fullerton’s newspaper, Pleiades, in the category of best publication of more than four pages.

Garden Grove’s Stephanie Stapf finished first in feature writing with a piece on shopping malls being the melting pots of today’s society. Teri Huggins and Jenny Mears of Sunny Hills and Foothill’s Cherie Yu received honorable mentions.

Andrew Sutherland of Corona del Mar won first place for staff editorial for his writing on businesses taking advantage of the environmentally conscious public. The honorable mention award went to Newport Harbor’s Joshua Corngold.

Villa Park’s Bryan Hwang finished first in sports writing with a story on a high school physics teacher who is an avid mountain climber. Jasmine Shoukry of Sunny Hills received honorable mention.

In the category of feature photography, Kennedy’s David Murdoch finished first with a picture of the school principal with a pie in his face, and Andrew Hess of Sunny Hills received honorable mention.

Laura Bass of Santiago was the first-place winner in the cartoon/illustration category for her political cartoon of how students react to AIDS. Honorable mentions went to Orange’s James Pezzetti and Woodbridge’s Mamata Kene.

In the category of best publication up to four pages, editor Hanh Phan accepted the award for Santiago’s newspaper, New Cavalier. Saddleback’s the Roadrunner received honorable mention.

Individual winners received $250, and the winning newspapers were awarded $1,000 to be used for their school’s journalism program.
