COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Glendale Runners Set Track Marks

Robert Nelson and Oved Aguirre of Glendale College got what they came for--school records--on the first day of the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Thursday night.

Nelson, a sophomore from Muir High, ran 8 minutes 57.4 seconds to finish fifth in the university-open 3,000-meter steeplechase, bettering the previous Glendale record of 9:00.0 set by Mark Lewis in 1979.

Aguirre, a sophomore from San Fernando High, followed with a 15th-place finish in the university-open 10,000 meters, running 30:14.91 to better the mark of 30:19.7 set by Terry Gibson in 1979.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 1-3, Utah 0-1--Missy Cress contributed run-scoring singles in both halves of the visiting Matadors’ doubleheader sweep.

Patti Pearson opened the seventh inning of the first game with a single and was sacrificed to second. She scored on Cress’ one-out single for the game’s only run.

In the second game, Cress contributed a run-scoring single in the first inning to spark a two-run rally for the Matadors (39-21-1).

Kathy Blake, a freshman from Paso Robles, pitched both games and allowed a total of 11 hits. Blake (22-5) struck out 11 and walked one over 14 innings.

UC San Diego tournament--Stacy Donaldson and Marjie Sievers pitched complete games as Cal Lutheran defeated Cal Baptist, 4-3, and UCSD, 3-1, in the first day of the round-robin tournament.

CLU’s Jodi Dyraud went three for six with three runs batted in on the day. Both games were held to six innings because of time constraints.

College of the Desert tournament--Theresa Pasinosky and Kathi Morales each had six hits as Moorpark split four games.

Moorpark (25-10) dropped into the losers’ bracket with a 6-5, six-inning loss to Long Beach City in the opener. The Raiders then beat San Bernardino Valley, 10-0, and San Diego Mesa, 1-0, before being eliminated in a 3-0 loss to Orange Coast.

BASEBALL

Canyons 5, Merced 2--Danny Gray smacked a three-run homer in the fifth inning to lift the Cougars (14-18) to a consolation win in the Hancock tournament at Santa Maria.

Anthony Chessani (1-1), starting his first game this season, scattered three hits and overcame a streak of wildness in going the distance.

The Master’s 16, Westmont 5--Joe Pence sparked an 11-run eighth inning with a three-run triple as the Mustangs (14-22, 9-8) rallied for an NAIA District 3 win at home.
