Mark O’Meara used a record-tying start of 30 on the back nine and an eagle on the front side to shoot a six-under-par 65 and tie Davis Love III and Chip Beck for the lead after Friday’s second round of the Heritage Classic.

Love, who teed off about five minutes after O’Meara completed play at Hilton Head Island, S.C., shot his second 67 to retain a share of first at 134.

Beck had a no-bogey 65 that included an eagle out of a bunker.

The leading trio had to share the spotlight with 49-year-old Raymond Floyd, who was in danger of missing the cut after an opening-round 74, but tied the course record with a 63 Friday to vault into a sixth-place tie at 137.

Lee Trevino had just shot an eight-under-par 64, but he wasn’t happy.

“I’m still hot about those two bogeys,” Trevino said after taking a four-stroke lead at the halfway point of the PGA Seniors Championship at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

His mood quickly improved, however, when he began recounting the fastest start of his career: a 29 on the front, nine under par after 10 holes and 10 under after 12.

“Yeah, after I make eagle on 10 and birdie on 12, I was thinking of the 50s,” said Trevino, who finished 36 holes at 136, eight under par on the PGA National course that played much easier than it had in howling winds during the opening round.

Gary Player shot 70 and was second at 140. Jack Nicklaus, the defending champion, moved up with a 68 and was at 141.

Deb Richard overcame bogeys on the first two holes with an eagle and five birdies for her second consecutive 67 and a four-shot lead halfway through the SEGA Women’s Championship at Stockbridge, Ga.

Richard had a 10-under-par 134 total for 36 holes on the Eagle’s Landing Country Club course.
