High School JROTC

So the San Diego Unified School District pays for 75% of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Program? I’ve always been a bit hazy on why JROTC is on our campuses in the first place, but to hear that we’re subsidizing most of it--that’s nutty!

What would happen if San Diego cut, say, a half-million dollars from JROTC? If it treated JROTC like an on-campus club or activity, providing classroom space and a minimum of services? Well, either the Pentagon would find a way to pick up the tab, or it would allow the program to shrink.

Either way, the military gets to establish its own priorities. Our armed services are the ones who benefit most from JROTC. Why not let them decide?
