“An Evening in Paris,” an all-French classical music concert, will be performed April 26 in Torrance by the Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay.

The orchestra is celebrating the centennial year of French composer Darius Milhaud and will feature one of his early works, inspired by a 1915 silent film by Charlie Chaplin. The film, “Tango Tangles,” will be shown during the performance of Milhaud’s “Le Boeuf sur la Toit” (the ox on the roof).

“This is a special gala, not a standard serious musical evening,” said Robert W. Miller, the orchestra’s president.

Doriot Anthony Dwyer, principal flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will be featured in a flute concerto under the direction of Frances Steiner, a Rancho Palos Verdes resident and professor of music at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Miller said his group is one of six California chamber orchestras receiving grants from the California Arts Council. The South Bay orchestra has sold out its last two concert seasons at Norris Theatre and is looking to build a following in Torrance.

Sunday’s performance will be the third by the orchestra at the Torrance Cultural Arts Center’s James Armstrong Theater. A preview talk by Miller begins at 7:15 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 general admission and $10 for senior citizens and students.
