California’s Death Penalty

Fundamentalists in every faith have so misused the term “blasphemy” in their attempts to vilify their opponents that I hesitate to utilize this term. Our language, however, is devoid of another word worthy to be attached to Conrad’s “Pieta” cartoon (April 12). What is particularly sad is Conrad’s obvious ignorance concerning the deeper theological and spiritual issues of atonement and self-sacrifice exemplified by the poignant moment at the foot of the cross captured artistically in the “Pieta.” To place the convicted murderer of two teen-age boys within this context is inexcusably vulgar and unspeakably offensive.

Printing this cartoon on Palm Sunday at the beginning of the Christian Holy Week is a paragon of poor taste.
