VIENNA : Waldheim Out; EC In?

Share

Austrians go to the polls Sunday to elect a new president to succeed Kurt Waldheim, the former U.N. secretary general who was internationally shunned during his six-year term because of accusations that he participated in Nazi war crimes.

Waldheim’s departure is expected to mean the end of Austria’s diplomatic isolation and clear the way for the small, neutral country to pursue its application for membership in the European Community.

Front runner among four contenders for the presidency is Rudolf Streicher, a Social Democrat who is currently transportation minister.
