A man convicted of killing his wife and disposing of her body in a burning boat off the San Diego coast was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison.

Gaylynn Earl Morris, 51, had admitted putting Ruby Morris’ body on a burning boat but claimed that she had committed suicide at their suburban Cave Creek home.

“The court believes the evidence of guilt was overwhelming in this case,” said Judge I. Sylvan Brown of Maricopa County Superior Court.

Morris, whose bid for a retrial was rejected, pinned his hopes on a promised appeal.

“It is the system that will set me free through a new trial,” Morris told the judge before sentencing.

Brown fined Morris, 51, an accountant, $205,500 for court and investigation costs in the case, which revolved around a love triangle and tales of sexual abuse of Mrs. Morris, 49.

The body was never found. It’s believed she was shot to death June 3, 1989.
