SPORTSCOPE : Toros End 10-Game CCAA Losing Streak

Cal State Dominguez Hills broke a school-record 10-game California Collegiate Athletic Assn. losing streak by defeating Cal State San Bernardino, 5-1, on Thursday.

Toro pitcher Tom Ball (8-4) went the distance. Dominguez Hills (18-21-1, 8-13 in league play) scored all of its runs on six San Bernardino errors.

The Toros’ Ernie Soto went three for four and scored two runs.

The teams will complete a suspended game at 3 p.m. today at San Bernardino before playing a scheduled game. The suspended game was tied, 6-6, after eight innings on March 7 in San Bernardino when it was halted because of rain.

On Saturday, the teams will play a 1 p.m. game at Carson.

On Tuesday, Dominguez Hills, was defeated by Cal Poly Pomona, 7-4.

San Bernardino (11-27, 4-16) lost three games to Cal State Los Angeles last week.

Pitching continues to be Dominguez Hills’ strength. The Toros have a 3.42 earned-run average, including a 2.87 ERA in conference play.

Starters Ball, Mark Tranberg and Ken Gajewski have all pitched well. Ball has an ERA of 2.23, Tranberg is 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA and Gajewski is 3-4 with a 2.68 ERA.

Junior catcher Corey Woinarowicz is batting .383 with a .511 slugging percentage.

The Dominguez Hills softball team split a doubleheader with San Bernardino on Thursday.

Michelle Mapstead singled in the winning run in the eighth inning of the first game as San Bernardino won, 2-1.

The Toros (30-16, 11-9 in the CCAA) trailed, 4-2, entering the seventh inning of the second game, but won it, 6-4, on a three-run home run by Melissa Punch.

The Loyola Marymount women’s and men’s tennis teams will compete in the West Coast Conference tennis championships today through Sunday.

The women’s championships are in Moraga, Calif., and the men’s tournament is in San Diego.

The Loyola women (9-15) are led by junior Vicki Cordova, who has a 9-14 record in singles matches. Cordova, who has been slowed because of an arm injury, is expected to be ready for the tournament.

Loyola sophomore Julie Oshiro is 8-13 in match play, and freshman Kelly McMillion is 10-14.

Pepperdine and San Diego are regarded as the tournament favorites; Loyola is expected to challenge for third place.

The men’s team (0-13) has been led by junior Natt Narkthong.

Sophomore Anthony Napolitano and senior Stacy Trapp have been selected as Loyola’s male and female student athletes of the year.

They will be honored today during the school’s Student Service and Leadership Awards Ceremony at 3 p.m. at Murphy Recital Hall.

Trapp, a middle blocker who was captain of the women’s volleyball team last season, earned her undergraduate degree in communications in May, 1991, and has a 3.35 grade-point average in her first year as a graduate student in the school’s MBA program. As a senior, she led the volleyball team in blocks, block assists and kill percentage.

Napolitano, a first baseman for the baseball team, has a 3.55 GPA and has been named to the dean’s list two of his first three semesters. He is batting .321 and leads the West Coast Conference with 18 doubles and 37 runs batted in.

The Inglewood Recreation and Community Services Department is sponsoring a youth boxing show at 1 p.m. next Friday at Rogers Park, 400 Beach Ave., Inglewood.

Admission is $5 and there is no charge for children 12 or younger.

Defensive lineman Bob Golic of the Raiders will speak at the Keystone Dinner and Installation for the Boys and Girls Club of Harbor City/Harbor Gateway at 6 p.m. Friday at the Harbor Gateway Holiday Inn in Torrance.
