Michael Jackson’s 9th Symphony?
The company that manages the Cleveland Orchestra sued singer Michael Jackson and Sony Music Entertainment, alleging that part of one of the orchestra’s recordings was stolen and used on Jackson’s hit album, “Dangerous.”
The suit also charges that Jackson is wrongfully credited with writing at least part of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
The Musical Arts Assn., which filed the suit in Manhattan federal court, is seeking at least $2 million in compensatory damages to cover lost royalties and $5 million in punitive damages from Jackson, Sony and its Epic Records subsidiary.
The Cleveland Orchestra and Jackson recordings at issue are on labels owned by Sony Corp. Sony said in a statement that it acted within its rights.
