Man Arrested in School Parking Lot Slaying

A 19-year-old gang member who works as a security guard in Tustin was arrested Friday in last week’s fatal shooting of a man in a Santa Ana High School parking lot after a pickup basketball game.

Uciel T. Murgo is believed to have been the gunman in the unprovoked attack 10 days ago by a group of gang members that left Mauro Meza, 31, dead and three relatives wounded, police said.

Police Lt. Robert Helton said Murgo was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder after being questioned.

Police would not comment on their investigation or say why they suspected Murgo.

“With this arrest, I think we can assure people that this kind of a crime is not going to go on without an all-out response and an all-out prosecution,” Mayor Daniel H. Young said.

Meza, a deliveryman and father of three, was killed April 15 when he was shot in the mouth and head as he and his companions attempted to drive out of the school parking lot after a pickup basketball game.

Police said gang members taunted the Meza group and opened fire on their van when one of the gang members was refused a cigarette.
