A rusty hand grenade was found in the sand at Divers Cove on Saturday but was quickly carried away by a bomb expert without harm to beach-goers, police said.

A retired Army colonel was cleaning trash near a cliff at 9:40 a.m. when he saw a small plastic bag sticking out from underneath the sand at the cove near Heisler Park, Police Sgt. Mike Hall said.

“He picked it up, and it either came out or the bag tore,” Hall said. “He was concerned enough about it to call us.”

The beach was closed for an hour as a bomb expert with the county Sheriff’s Department inspected the grenade, then carried it to his car, Hall said.

Several beach-goers enjoying the warm weather were evacuated. “There were a lot of divers in wet suits prepared to go on a dive at that time,” Hall added.

Police do not know where the grenade came from or how it got under the sand.
