So, This Is What Betty Friedan Has Come To?
I was shocked to read in Betty Goodwin’s article on Women in Film (“Above and Beyond the Backlash,” April 1) that “pioneering feminist” Betty Friedan applauded “Thelma and Louise” at an Academy Awards viewing.
I wonder what Friedan liked most--the near-rape on a car trunk, the killings or the fiery explosion the two women set off?
“The unexpected selling power of some of these movies . . . about two women buddies . . . can save some of these bankrupt movie studios,” Friedan is quoted as saying.
So here is Friedan looking to save bankrupt studios through bankrupt female characters in a mindless movie.
How did she arrive at this after a lifetime of work in the cause of women achieving their potential?
