COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pepperdine, Ranked Fourth in Nation, Hangs On, Edges UC Irvine in Baseball

Pepperdine’s baseball team, ranked fourth in the nation, scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning then held on for a 4-3 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference game Tuesday at UC Irvine.

Scott Vollmer’s two-out single drove in Mark Wasikowski, who had led off the fifth with a double, to break a 3-3 tie for visiting Pepperdine (34-10-1). Wasikowski is a junior from Los Alamitos High and Rancho Santiago College.

Corey Parker hit a solo home run, his sixth of the season, in the first inning for Irvine (20-23). Steve Ott and Tim McDonnell each had two hits for the Anteaters.

In other nonconference games:

Christ College Irvine 6, Loyola Marymount 4--Mike Adams had three hits and two runs batted in and Rodney Nelson had two hits and two RBIs and for visiting CCI (27-11). Lonnie Zimmerman earned his fifth victory without a defeat and Armando Diaz picked up his third save for the Eagles.

San Diego 4, Chapman 3 (10 innings)--Kevin Herde’s single drove in Jim Keen with the winning run in the 10th inning for host University of San Diego (25-22). Buster Nietzke had a three-run home run in the seventh for Chapman (29-18).
