SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Sign-Ups Begin for Summer Programs

Sign-ups have begun for the Capistrano Unified School District’s summer programs for elementary, middle and high school students.

Applications for the programs, which will be centered around the theme “Summer Schoolympics: Striving to Be Your Best,” are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and enrollment is limited, district officials said.

At the elementary-school level, an integrated, literature-based program focusing on enrichment and basic skills will be offered in classes that will be held June 24 through July 22.

Students will participate in field studies and trips and will also have opportunities to take part in classroom music activities.

An awards ceremony will be a part of each program and will recognize the efforts of students who exhibit good attendance, good behavior and good effort.

Seven of the district’s elementary schools will participate in the summer program. They are Marian Bergeson, Truman Benedict, Del Obispo, Richard Henry Dana, Newhart, San Juan and Philip J. Reilly.

The district will also offer a Summer Science Institute for elementary school students June 29 through July 24 at San Juan Elementary School.

The institute, which will give students the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on science activities, is being held in conjunction with UC Irvine, the Nichols Institute, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, and the Orange County Marine Institute.

Middle school students will have the opportunity to participate in summer programs at Marco Forster and Newhart schools. Course offerings for the middle school students will include mathematics, language arts, arts and crafts, and computers.

Students who will be eighth-graders next fall or who are high achieving sixth-graders can participate in a special two-week math academy designed to stimulate an interest in math. The academy will run July 13 through 31.

High school students can participate in a six-week program, which can earn them as much as 10 units of credit toward their diploma.

The high school program will begin June 22 and offer courses in math, language arts, social science, business, computers, science and foreign language.

Applications for the regular summer school programs and the science institute are available at all elementary schools. Applications for the math academy are available at both elementary and middle schools.
