HUNTINGTON BEACH — In an apparent gang attack near Central Park, an 18-year-old man was wounded by gunshots fired from a passing car Sunday evening, police said.
The unidentified man was shot in the hip about 7:20 p.m. while standing next to a car with three Latino youths on Central Park Drive near Lakeview Drive, Huntington Beach Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said.
Witnesses told police that the shots were fired from a car carrying two Asians, people who shouted gang slogans as they drove past, Ochoa said.
The unidentified man was driven by friends to Humana Hospital-Huntington Beach, where he was listed in stable condition late Sunday.
Ochoa said that the apparent gang-related shooting was unusual for Huntington Beach and that it was also relatively rare to see gangs of different ethnicity fighting one another.
“(Gang shootings are) not a severe problem here, so it is unusual for us to have this,” he said. “Something sparked it, but we don’t know what it was.”
