TAIPEI : Fun Run to Beijing
Teams of runners from Taiwan and China will set out Sunday on a “super-relay” marathon, covering a 1,700-mile route from Taipei to Beijing in two weeks.
The run is described by backers as “the first-ever sports event linking both sides of the (Taiwan) Strait.” It comes against a background of growing economic and people-to-people ties between Nationalist-ruled Taiwan and the Communist-ruled mainland. Both sides officially view themselves as part of a single Chinese nation.
Athletes will run from downtown Taipei to the airport, then fly to Shanghai, where they resume their run. They are to arrive May 23 in Beijing.
