Share

A man forced his way into the cashier’s office of a Ventura gas station Wednesday and stole more than $300 in cash after saying he needed a pack of cigarettes because he had just been released from jail.

The robbery occurred a few minutes before 4 a.m. when a man who appeared to be about 21 approached a cashier who was cleaning up at the U.S.A. gas station in the 1700 block of South Victoria Avenue, said Ventura Police Sgt. Randy Janes.

After asking the cashier for a pack of menthol cigarettes, the muscular robber forced his way into the booth and pinned the clerk against a wall, Janes said. The unarmed robber left on foot after taking at least $300 from the cash register, he said. He fled without taking any cigarettes, said the cashier, who has been fired.

Cigarette smoking has been banned at the County Jail for more than a year, a sheriff’s deputy said.
