OXNARD : Buses to Serve Beaches, Hospital
Public buses will continue serving Oxnard’s beach communities and a new bus route will connect downtown with the new St. John’s Medical Center, a South Coast Area Transit spokeswoman said Thursday.
Last month, Oxnard’s City Council voted to discontinue the beaches bus route in an attempt to save money, despite several petitions from riders.
The route serves Oxnard Shores, Silver Strand and Hollywood-by-the-Sea beaches.
But the SCAT board voted 5 to 1 Wednesday to overrule the Oxnard council, SCAT spokeswoman Darlene Fuller said.
The Oxnard representative on the board cast the lone dissenting vote, she said.
“There’s an unmet need in the area and board members felt the service should continue,” she said.
The board also voted to start in September a bus route connecting the new hospital and the Price Club mall with downtown, Fuller said.
