Robert Gladstein
Robert Gladstein, choreographer, dancer and former assistant director of the San Francisco Ballet, died in San Francisco at 49.
He died at his home Tuesday of cancer, according to a friend.
Born in Berkeley, Gladstein made his debut at age 10 when he danced in a production of “The Nutcracker” by the San Francisco Ballet School. He graduated from the school in 1960.
He moved east in 1967 to dance with New York’s American Ballet Theatre. He returned to San Francisco in 1970 as a principal dancer of the San Francisco Ballet. He became the company’s ballet master in 1975, and its assistant director and artistic coordinator in 1980. He left California again in 1986 to become ballet master for the Dallas Ballet, a position he held until 1988.
Gladstein served on the board of the San Francisco Archive for the Performing Arts and was a member of the dance advisory panel of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1981 to 1986.
He is survived by his companion, Bart Rawlinson; a son, Marcus Gladstein of Los Angeles; his mother, Wilda Gladstein of Novato, Calif., and a sister.
