‘GOOD WOOD’

Share

I was very pleased to note the enlightened reference to the growing availability of wood from “sustainably” managed forests in Barbara Thornburg’s Style piece (“Into the Woods,” April 5). The grave concern that woodworkers, architects, furniture makers and environmentalists have expressed about the implications of the ongoing destruction of forests around the world is stimulating a demand for sustainable forestry practices and ecologically minded lumber suppliers.

The following nonprofit organizations have available listings of domestic and foreign sources of ecologically responsible, environmentally correct, “good wood”: Institute for Sustainable Forestry, P.O. Box 1580, Redway, Calif. 95560; The Wood User’s Guide, Rainforest Action Network, 450 Sansome St., San Francisco 94111; Smart Wood Program, Rainforest Alliance, 270 Lafayette St., New York, N.Y. 10012; Woodworkers Alliance for Rainforest Protections, P.O. Box 133, Coos Bay, Ore. 97420.
