Disaster Aid Programs

Eight disaster assistance centers opened last week throughout the city, offering government aid programs to riot victims. The centers will remain open indefinitely. More information on the following programs is available at disaster centers. Call (800) 525-0321 for more information and the location of the nearest center:

* Disaster loans to individuals and businesses: Based on the type and extent of uninsured disaster-related losses and damages, individuals may be eligible for low-interest loans for property losses and damages of up to $100,000 for homes and $20,000 for personal property; businesses may be eligible for up to $500,000.

* Disaster housing assistance program: This program helps people who cannot or should not live in their homes because of damage or other disaster-related reasons. Federal Emergency Management Agency, (800) 525-0321.

* Grants to individuals and families: Grants of up to $11,500 may be available to eligible individuals and families who are unable to meet disaster-related necessary expenses. California Department of Social Services Individual Family Grant Program, (800) 759-6807.

* Income tax advice and assistance: Guidance provided in obtaining tax relief for disaster casualty losses. Internal Revenue Service, (800) 829-1040, or State Franchise Tax Board, (800) 852-5711.

* Social Security assistance: Help in expediting delivery of checks delayed by the disaster and in applying for Social Security disability and survivor benefits. Social Security Administration, (800) 772-1213.

* Veterans assistance: Guidance in obtaining death benefits, pensions and insurance settlements. Veterans Administration, (800) 827-2013; California Veterans Affairs (800) 221-8998; (800) 952-LOAN.

* Emergency individual and family needs: Emergency food, clothing, shelter and medical assistance may be provided to individuals and families having such needs as a result of the disaster. * Insurance information: Advice to people on insurance requirements, claims and problems with settlement. State Department of Insurance, (800) 927-4357.

* Crisis counseling: Referral services and counseling are available for emotional and mental health problems caused or aggravated by the disaster. Contact your local mental health agency.
