A nonprofit organization is looking for people to run day-care centers in Thousand Oaks.

“Infant care is constantly in demand,” said Sylvia Preston, a manager for the resource and referral department of Child Development Resources of Ventura County in Oxnard.

There are an estimated 4,078 infants and toddlers under age 3 in Thousand Oaks, but licensed openings are available for only 241 children in that age group, Preston said.

She said the group’s goal over the next two years is to recruit about 100 people to run child-care programs in their homes.

Preston’s organization received $20,000 from the California Resource and Referral Network, a statewide nonprofit group, to operate the two-year project.

It has also received matching funds from GTE, Rockwell International, Los Robles Regional Medical Center and other Thousand Oaks-based employers.

By training more day-care operators, the group hopes to boost the number of slots available for child-care by 400 to 500, Preston said.

Child Development Resources refers parents to licensed day-care centers in Conejo Valley as well as other parts of the county.
