Nebraska, W. Virginia Primaries Today
Nebraska and West Virginia hold their primaries today and both Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton and President Bush were expected to win their contests easily.
For Democrat Clinton and his rival, former California Gov. Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown Jr., 56 delegates are at stake--25 in Nebraska and 31 in West Virginia. In the Republican race, 42 delegates will be apportioned--24 from Nebraska and 18 from West Virginia.
Bush has already clinched the GOP nomination, with 1,230 delegates to rival Patrick J. Buchanan’s 68. Bush needed 1,105 delegates to secure the nomination. On the Democratic side, Clinton is well on his way toward the 2,145 delegates he needs. As of Monday, he had 1,738 to Brown’s 343. Former candidate Paul E. Tsongas, who has suspended his campaign, had 537, and 518 were uncommitted.
