The Press : Europe Views U.S. Election

Share

The seemingly interminable U.S. presidential campaign is something of a wonder to Europeans. They mostly favor the parliamentary system, with its mercifully short campaigns of a few weeks or so, often launched on a moment’s notice.

But to European cartoonists, the long U.S. political show is a bonus, giving them plenty of time to splash ink over the major players. And this year, of course, the spattered targets are Republican President Bush and the Democratic front-runner, Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Ouch!

It seems Clinton has something of an image problem, beleaguered by family and financial questions. And Bush has plenty of images--but which one to pick? Well, no need to make a decision until November.
